Day 9 Sat Oct 5, 2019 – ALBI & HENRI DE TOULOUSE -LAUTREC
The morning is devoted to the “red” Albi standing proudly on the banks of the river Tarn.Marked by the Crusade against the Albigensians or Cathars, the city is a remarkable artistic and architectural heritage, the jewel of which is Sainte-Cecile Cathedral. This fortress cathedral is a masterpiece of southern gothic architecture. Stroll through the “Vieil” Albi (old town) and visit the former archbishop palace, which is the unexpected site for the artistic work of Henri de Toulopuse-Lautrec, born in Albi in 1864. More than 1000 paintings are housed in the museum, including all of the 31 posters he designed, depicting the world of entertainment and the characters in the theaters and cabarets .
In the afternoon, tour the Aveyron Gorges between St Antonin Noble Val and Bruniquel. Perched villages and medieval castles have been erected on the cliffs overlooking the Gorges. You are in for a spectacular drive. Stroll through St Antonin : an authentic medieval town, old stone houses and narrow winding streets, and France’s oldest city hall…

You will have some free time for lunch in the historic center and to discover the medieval and Renaissance quarter, town mansions, workshops and squares all dominated by the mighty domes of Saint Front Cathedral. This cathedral was modified by the architect Abadie during the 19thcentury, before he designed the Sacré Coeur in Paris.
Continue on to Rouffignac to visit the Cave of the One Hundred Mammoths, one of the largest decorated caves in the western world. Around 13000 years ago, the galleries provided a sanctuary where 158 mammoths as well as wooly rhinoceros, bisons, horses, and 4 human representations were drawn and engraved (Visit by little train) This will be one of the many highlights of this trip as it shows watercolor being the oldest painting medium known to man !

Day 4 Mon Sep 30, 2019 - WINE DAY IN MEDOC
After breakfast, departure to discover the Medoc area, a well known wine-producing area of France which lends its name to the most prestigious vintages in the world. Make sure to bring your painting supplies today ! This morning, discover the famous Chateau Margaux classified as 1er Grand Cru. To the famous 1855 official classification, only 4 growths were ranked “first great classified Growths” and Margaux was the only one to be marked 20 out of 20.
Then we continue to the Château Beychevelle, a prestigious Cru classé whose character has been forged by 3 centuries of history. The elegance of its classical architecture makes it a jewel in the crown of the Medoc. Visit followed by a wine tasting.
In the afternoon, enjoy a stroll at your own leisure in the old quarters of Pauillac, at the edge of the estuary of the Gironde river (The largest estuary in Europe) and come across the model of the boat of La Fayette. Spend time shopping, painting or wandering around.
On the way back to Bordeaux, we will make a stop near vineyards where you will have time to paint outside.

Day 3 Sun Sep 29, 2019 - BORDEAUX – DUNE DU PILAT
This morning discover Bordeaux, internationally renowned for its vintage wines and nicknamed the “Port of the Moon” as it lies in the biggest crescent-shaped hallow of the Garonne. Imagine the Golden Age of Bordeaux in the 18thcentury at the Esplanade des Quinconces, The Grand Theatre, The Place de la Bourse, the Quai des Chartrons, the Public Gardens… Next, stroll though the medieval and gothic Bordeaux without missing the old quarter of Saint Pierre which, little by little, has rediscovered itself through renovation work and its art galleries. Enjoy some free time to set up to sketch on a side street or on a square and to enjoy lunch at leisure.

Day 11 Monday Oct 7, 2019 – DEPARTURE
Transfer to the airport in Bordeaux for your flight home.

This afternoon, visit Rocamadour. This medieval pilgrimage town, with its slender castle keep towering above it, comprises a mass of old dwellings, oratories, towers and precipitous rocks on the rugged face of a cliff rising 492 feet above the Alzou Canyon. The ecclesiastical city rises above the village and the whole scene is crowned by the castle ramparts. Visit to the chapel housing the Holy Black Madona. Then continue on to Albi. In the late afternoon, check-in at your 3* hotel located in the surroundings of Albi. Meals B,L,D
Day 7 Thu Oct 3, 2019 - ROCAMADOUR
This morning after breakfast you will be taken to Padirac. Here you will visit the chasm of Padirac which provides access to wonderful galleries hollowed out of the limestone mass by a subterranean river. Tour by gondola into the vertiginous well and the vast caves: a fascinating underground world!
Day 6 Wed Oct 2, 2019 – SARLAT & THE DORDOGNE VALLEY
Enjoy a full day in the Dordogne Valley that will include a guided visit of Sarlat, the rich medieval city and Capital of the Black Perigord where you will see many treasures. This town has been used many times for film scenes. Enjoy some free time for shopping and painting in this wonderful city. Lunch at leisure.
The afternoon is devoted to the Dordogne Valley, re-christened with good reason, the Royal Valley. Visit to the Beynac Castle, home of one of the 4 baronies of Perigord, located on the frontier between the English and the French during ther hundred years war. Continue to La Roque Gageac for a boat trip in a traditional Gabare, these are boats that were used by merchants for river traffic joining the upper Dordogne to Bordeaux. This. Cruise will enable you to enjoy magnificent scenery provided by the Royal Valley with many châteaux. - Meals B,D

Your Tour Manager will welcome you to Bordeaux.
You will be transferred to your hotel in the center of Bordeaux. This afternoon enjoy some free time and meet with Susan for the ones of you who would like to start with sketching while some may decide to stroll around town. Dinner at leisure.

Day 5 Tue Oct 1, 2019 – PERIGUEUX & 100 MAMMOTH CAVE
This morning coach departure to Perigueux, the Dordogne’s capital city. Spend the morning exploring the antique city of Vesona, proudly boasting numerous Gallo Roman monuments such as the Arenas, Vesona Tower and Pompeius Villa… On our way, visit the Vesona Museum housing antique remains discovered from excavations (jewels, dishes, tombstones…)
We continue our journey to a private Wine Chateau. Here you will be welcomed by the Chateau’s owner. After a “casse croute vigneron” on site, you will be lead to the cellars for a wine tasting.

Day 8 Fri Oct 4, 2019 – CORDES SUR CIEL & AVEYRON GORGES
This morning is dedicated to Cordes Sur Ciel which remained the 1ststronghold of the Albi region for a long time. Founded in 1222 by the Count of Toulouse, Cordes is the 1stand most important “Bastide” in France, today renowned because of its private mansions whose architecture is typical of Gothic style. The facades with its high relief sculptures illustrate perfectly the spirit of the middle ages’s art.
Day 10 Sun Oct 6, 2019 – SAINT EMILION
This morning, original discovery of Saint Emilion listed as World Heritage Site by Unesco. This fortified village built in the form of an amphitheater is perched on slopes above the Dordogne Valley. Here the vines were first planted which spread over the course of the centuries to become the prestigious winegrowing area producing the world famous wines we know today. nA guided walking tour of the village will allow you to appreciate the medieval monuments which characterize its religious and military background : Saint Emilion hermitage, the Monolithic church entirely carved out of the rock, the only one in Europe of its size and its bell tower… Then with your guide you will tour the Saint Emilion Grand Cru Appelation which spread over the 8 parishes of the old jurisdiction recognized in 1289 by King Edward 1stof England.
This afternoon, depart for the Arcachon Bay scattered with numerous sea resorts, popular ones and refined others. Arcachon is well known as the most elegant one. Stroll in the 19th century sea resort, Villas, Casino, Parks… Continue onto the highest sand dune in Europe, the Pilat Dune, 375 feet high, the result of winds and strong sea currents. You may join Timothee for a climb to the top where you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the bay and the vast Landes forest or you may want to stay at the bottom of the dune and spend some time sketching.
Return to Bordeaux.
